Grand Mal – 1/19/14

Ugh…so Topaz had a seizure this morning at 9:00 am or right before. We straight up ran out of his Potassium Bromide and he hasn’t had any in a couple days. We are seriously bad epi parents!!!

The seizure was the usual grand mal. He was vocal, which is what woke me up…he was on the floor this time. He peed himself also.

The past few times he’s been taking a few extra minutes (may actually be seconds) to come out of the seizure.

I gave him his usually cocktail of Breyer’s Vanilla, 2 1/4 PB, a Valium (we found two! Thank God!) and rescue remedy.

Last time he had a seizure and I posted it on Facebook, one of my friends posted this:

try putting powdered bovine colostrum into his food, it helped resolve my dogs epilepsy.. since adding that in 6 years ago we have been seizure free  i use symbiotic’s powdered bovine colostrum PLUS… you can find it the cheapest from vitacost.com. its a holistic way that helped my dog who suffered from weekly seizures and has now been seizure free for over 5 years.  hope this helps

The store where we get the dogs’ raw food sells this so I am going to see how much it is and we will be getting it this coming week when we pick up next pay’s dog food. I want to go back to giving them RMB as well as the mix they’ve been getting. So maybe we’ll get those also.

So anyways….gotta reset my boy’s clock. Poor puppa.

Dangerous Foods for Dogs

I have seen this posted on Pinterest by a few different people and I think it’s important enough to include on the blog.

I did not create this and take no credit for it. The credit is at the bottom and the link to the artist’s website is Doggie Drawings.  Also, a link on her site to a post about the poster.

Check out her Flickr site as well!!! She does AWESOME pet portraits!! Here are a few of them:

For Jenn: ROYAL, JET, BERNIE

For Sal: EROL & PENNY

For Arlette: RUFUS THE PLUMBER

SO talented!!!

You can even buy magnets with the dangerous foods on them.

Should mention that I am not affiliated with this artist in any way.

12/22/2013 – Grand Mal

Ugh!! I wish I didn’t have to write an update!

However, as this seizure monster is unpredictable, unfortunately, I do have to update.

This morning at 10:00 am ish, Topaz had a grand mal seizure on my bed.

He peed himself and foamed…he was also vocal and although the seizure wasn’t really long, he did tic a little after it and it took a few minutes for him to come around. People who own dogs that have seizures know what I am talking about when I say you can see the moment the seizure is done and they are back. Of course there is the post-itcal stage and he’s still in that, but there is that moment where he snaps out of the seizure and is back with us.

I gave him his post-seizure cocktail of ice cream, 2 gr PB, and Rescue Remedy. We don’t have valium right now so a call to the vet will need to me made on Monday. We just need a few pills for after seizures. I think it helps him go to sleep and makes the post ictal stage shorter.

No clue on triggers…again, kind of wonky weather right now. Been raining for a couple days. Maybe that’s it…who knows.

We’ll keep an eye on him…

New Site, Design, and Seizure Update

It has been a while since I have updated or needed to update this blog. Please pardon the mess while I sort out the new format and get everything designed just how I like it. I’m pretty excited about the changes, even if this blog is mainly used as a diary for Topaz’s seizure activity. No reason why it can’t be pretty, right?

2013 has not been my boy’s year as far as seizures go. I didn’t update the past few times because I didn’t know the password for the original site…it really had been THAT long.

Unfortunately, he broke his streak and had a seizure on July 31, 2013. As usual, it was a Grand Mal. I don’t remember what happened. Part of the problem with delaying the blogging is that I don’t remember what happened…

Anyway, after that one we just kept an eye on him. He had another Grand Mal on September 1st and then another on the 15th. I believe both of those he had in my bed and I want to say that one of those he actually had on ME, he collapsed onto me while trying to get to me. That was horrible…trying to stay calm while your dog is seizing and needed to wake up a sleeping husband in the next room all while trying not to yell and needing to grab the dog when he comes out of it so that he doesn’t fall off the bed. Yeah, don’t want to have to do that again…ever.

After those two seizures in September I believe we upped his Phenob from 1 1/4 gr to 1 3/4 gr. I need to double check on Facebook and see if that is when we upped the meds or not.

He had another Grand Mal on October 4th around 4:35am. Actually, we may have upped the meds after that seizure. Still, I need to check and will correct this…

THEN…I went on vacation in November for two weeks. We had some CRAZY weather in Michigan at that time…tornados…in November. So.weird. I don’t know if it was the weather or the stress of me being gone so long, but he had 2 seizures while I was gone. One on November 15 and another on November 18.

Poor Puppa has had a hell of a couple months. Hopefully that is behind us.

10/22/12–Grand Mal Seizure

Wow. It has been a WHILE since I have had to update this blog!!

That is an AWESOME thing!!

Unfortunately, Topaz’s 511 (!!!) day seizure free streak was broken this morning at approx 8:30am.

I was at work so I don’t know the details, but my husband said he wasn’t vocal, didn’t wet himself, and snapped out of if pretty quickly. When I got home from work he was waiting for me – as usual – excited to see me, – as usual – and seems a bit more anxious than normal…which is normal after a seizure.

Nothing has changed that I know of…maybe he got in to something or maybe it was just time.

Will keep an eye on him…but planning to carry on as normal!
